The energy transition is in full swing. In more and more places, fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas are being replaced by renewable energy from the sun and wind, which can be generated and delivered locally. But that does not solve the challenges ahead, knows Jim Craig, Managing Director at Zwart. "The energy transition requires flexibility from all energy users as well as energy products. Especially as we become increasingly dependent on power. After all, solar and wind energy production has a greater contribution to the energy mix. Where at some moments there will be a surplus of energy, at other moments (large) shortages will occur. As a result, the function of battery packs and generators, for example, is increasingly shifting from an emergency power solution to a broader solution for energy security."
When it comes to energy, Craig identifies two trends. "In our country, there is huge investment in solar and wind farms. And businesses and residents are also investing in solar panels, which is filling up the grid in more and more places in our country. The supply of renewable energy from solar and wind is enormous at many times of our year, but we cannot always make use of it. At the same time, the demand for energy is increasing significantly. More and more companies and residents are getting rid of gas and investing in heat pumps. There are more and more electric cars and industry is also becoming increasingly electrified. Unfortunately, our infrastructure is not (yet) suitable for this. Because the electricity grid is overcrowded, more than 10,000 companies in our country can no longer pursue their growth plans."
"In the past, power and emergency power were very clearly regulated," Craig emphasizes. "Companies got their power from the grid, and the emergency power system served as an extra security, for the very small chance that the grid would fall short or fail. Today, however, this probability is significant. Especially for companies that demand more power. Energy security is no longer a given, unless appropriate measures are taken. Companies no longer need emergency power, but power. Because our grid operators can no longer provide energy security, local solutions are a must."
These local solutions can be very simple, Craig says. "For example, companies can install a battery, which draws power from the grid when available for use at peak times (peakshaving/peakshifting). For those with more extensive power needs, we can install larger battery packs (Energy Storage Systems/ESS), combined heat and power (CHP) units, gas engines, Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) and emergency power generators and combine them with in-house renewable energy sources as required." All of Zwart's systems are supplied including intelligent controls. Zwart also provides energy management systems for energy optimization and in-house energy trading, increasing the return on investment. If required, Zwart can also co-finance part of the investment in energy security. "Thanks to our solutions, manufacturing companies can maintain continuity in their production processes, while data centers can keep their services running. In hospitals, our solutions ensure that all important departments and critical medical equipment remain in operation. In short, our powerful machines are on standby when the regular power supply falters and are indispensable for companies, institutions and critical infrastructure during power outages."
To ensure the reliability of its systems, without hiccups or delays, all of Zwart's systems undergo rigorous testing. "Customers can rely on nearly 100 years of experience in (emergency) power solutions," Craig concludes. "We are one of the most experienced power security suppliers in Europe and partner with Mitsubishi, Rolls Royce and Schneider Electric, among others, who supply high quality components. This allows us to guarantee 99.999% reliability. Combined with periodic maintenance and remote monitoring, our systems are always ready for use."
