To address the ever-increasing housing shortage, more and more homes are being prefabricated. In addition to timber frame construction and prefabricated concrete construction, the demand for Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) applications is growing, because this allows for even faster, more accurate, CO2-neutral and fire-safe construction. For fire-safe construction, the linear connection joints and penetrations must be properly sealed. Bostik Fire Protect supports this with an extensive range of certified products for CLT applications.
"CLT construction mainly involves milling, which allows very precise and clean work," explains Nick Haring, business developer for Fire Protect at Bostik. "Because the wood is cross-glued, expansion, shrinkage and dilation, for example, are not an issue. The material is stable and retains its shape in all directions. Moreover, CLT is thermally insulating and airtight, and its behavior in case of fire is very well predictable. CLT has considerable fire resistance. To include linear connection joints and penetrations, we recommend that attention be paid to the right products, thicknesses and positions as early as the design phase. This can save time and money in the implementation phase."
Many products are available for fire-resistant sealing of linear connection joints and penetrations. But the range of products with CLT certification is still scarce, Haring knows. "The Bostik Fire Protect range for CLT applications has already been tested in various practical situations in an independent and certified laboratory in 2021," he says. "The tests were carried out in accordance with EN 1366-4 (Determination of the fire resistance of installations in buildings - Part 4: Seals for straight joints) and EN 1366-3 (Determination of the fire resistance of installations - Part 3: Seals for penetrations) and both individually and in combinations, making a certified solution available for every situation." The results of all tests are summarized in classification and test reports, which can be freely downloaded from the website passivebrandwerendheid.nl
In addition to intumescent acrylic sealants for linear connection joints and penetrations, the Bostik Fire Protect range for CLT applications includes various thicknesses of stone wool panels with intumescent coating, cuffs that foam up when heated, pipe wraps, putty cords and mortars, which not only ensure fire and smoke safety, but also allow for significantly faster work. Popular products in the range include the Bostik FP 310 Intumescent Acoustic Acrylic sealant, the FP 312 Fire Retardant Coating, the FP 330 Pipe Collar fire cuff, the 340 Pipe Wrap and the FP 320 Fire Batt rock wool board. All products comply with EMICODE® EC1 Plus and are excellent for BREEAM projects.
