CLT projects also require certified products

To address the ever-increasing housing shortage, more and more homes are being prefabricated. In addition to timber frame construction and prefabricated concrete construction, the demand for Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) applications is growing, because this allows for even faster, more accurate, CO2-neutral and fire-safe construction. For fire-safe construction, the linear connection joints and penetrations must be properly sealed. "CLT construction mainly involves milling, which allows very precise and clean work," explains Nick Haring, business developer for Fire Protect at Bostik. "Because the wood is cross-glued, expansion, shrinkage and dilation, for example, are not an issue. The material is stable and retains its shape in all directions. Moreover, CLT is thermally insulating and airtight, and its behavior in case of fire is very well predictable. CLT has considerable fire resistance. This can save time and money in the implementation phase."

Many products are available for fire-resistant sealing of linear connection joints and penetrations. But the range of products with CLT certification is still scarce, Haring knows.
